The best anti-dark eye contour make-up: red lipstick

16.10.2024
Several makeup artists use red lipstick to remove and blend dark circles under the eyes. Marta Arce, make-up artist and co-creative director of U/1ST, explains the whys and wherefores of this trick and her opinion on whether it's suitable (or not) for any type of dark circles.

THE STORY OF THE POWER OF RED LIPSTICK

"The colour red is often associated with passion, danger, revolution and power... Throughout history, we can see different important moments of the power of red lipstick. For example, in 1912, Elisabeth Arden distributed red lipstick on the streets of New York to the suffragettes who were campaigning for the right to vote. They wore this colour, which was associated with rebellious women at the time. During the Second World War, red lipstick became a symbol of social strength to boost morale in times of crisis. In 1943, Elizabeth Arden was commissioned to create a lipstick that would be officially used to coordinate the uniforms of women serving in the US Armed Forces to boost morale. Victory Red was born," says Marta Arce.

And so we could describe many more relevant moments of the POWER of red lipstick throughout history, a power that also transfers to the face.

WHY AND HOW TO APPLY RED LIPSTICK TO DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES

"Red lipstick transforms the face, making you instantly more attractive. It brings colour and light to the skin. It makes the lips look bigger, fuller and sexy. It symbolises strength, femininity, courage, and passion. It adds glamour and class, and it looks good on all skin types," she says.

"The technique of using red lipstick to make-up and correct dark circles have been in vogue for a few years now, and those of us who know colour theory know why and how to use it: blue/violet tones are corrected with orange tones and green tones with reddish tones. Dark circles tend to be in the bluish range and can, therefore, be corrected with reddish/orange lipsticks, which are their complementary shades," says the make-up artist and co-creative director of U/1ST.

"Nowadays, there are other options, such as concealers, and there is no need to apply red lipstick to dark circles. Although, knowing that it's an option, it's a good dark-circle trick for when we're putting on make-up and, by mistake, we haven't got the concealer in our make-up bag or handbag. But be careful: you need to have the right shade of red so that everything comes out the way you want, and you don't make the look worse," she adds.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A RED LIPSTICK

"Although they all look good on all faces, there are always some that are more flattering than others because there are many shades of red and skin types. When in doubt, ask your trusted make-up artist for advice to help you find the one that is really 100% for you," says Marta Arce.

As Bill Blass once said: "When in doubt, wear RED”

"Important: Remember that when you choose a lipstick with active ingredients, you get many more benefits than with an ordinary red lipstick. As well as enhancing colour, it nourishes, moisturises, rejuvenates and adds volume".

MULTIACTIVE ADVANCED LIP SERUM CARMEN BY U/1ST

This semi-matte red lipstick contains retinyl acetate in its formula: retinol ester, which is well tolerated by the skin and also liposoluble, so it can be applied day and night in controlled quantities and combined with waxes and oils to regenerate, protect, and rejuvenate the lips; hyaluronic acid, which improves the hydration, texture, and appearance of wrinkles on the lips; and argan oil and vegetable waxes, which nourish, moisturise, and soften the lips.

TIPS FOR GOOD LIP MAKE-UP BY MARTA ARCE

Step 1

Start by thoroughly cleansing and removing make-up from the lips.

Step 2

Exfoliating the lips removes dead skin and prepares them for the next step. This way, the lips are ready to be moisturised, the lipstick glides on better, and we automatically have a smooth, moisturised, and plumper texture.

Step 3

If we want more volume and definition, even a perfect red finish, we can draw the shape with a lip pencil over the contour and fill it in with creamy red lipstick.

Step 4

Finally, apply a light foundation around the lip contour to emphasise colour, shape and volume.

If you've forgotten your concealer and need to improvise, it's time to try your red lipstick.
