Why you should include Vitamin C in your skincare routine

11.07.2023

From its moisturising and antioxidant powers to its ability to restore radiance to the face and achieve the coveted glow effect, discover why vitamin C has become one of the star ingredients in the beauty world, from cosmetics to make-up.

It may sound silly, but when you think about it, vitamin C has always been a part of your life - probably more than you realise: from those orange juices you used to drink as a child, screaming, "Drink it fast or you'll lose your vitamins!", to becoming one of the essential ingredients in (almost) every cosmetic product. But what is it about this antioxidant that makes it a beauty must-have? An expert explains.

What is vitamin C, and how does it benefit the skin?

Vitamin C - or ascorbic acid - is an essential molecule for skin health. In fact, it is a naturally occurring component of the skin. It starts in high concentrations, but with age, sun exposure or pollution, its levels gradually decline

So, what does vitamin C do for your skin?

Dr Moisés Amselem, head of aesthetic medicine at the Martín del Yerro | Amselem  Clinic, highlights four main benefits:

  • It is a powerful antioxidant that stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis, which are vital to maintaining healthy skin.
  • It is vital in preventing damage from free radicals that cause skin oxidation.
  • It helps to prevent (and reduce) blemishes, wrinkles, and other signs of accelerated ageing.
  • It improves texture, evens skin tone, and provides luminosity for that coveted 'glow' effect'.

How to include vitamin C in your skincare routine

To counteract the natural loss of vitamin C, topical application of products containing this powerful antioxidant is necessary from traditional cosmetics - masks, serums or creams - to make-up itself. For Dr Moisés Amselem, the choice of good make-up is directly related to the skin's health. "We constantly see skin problems caused by make-up that is not recommended," he points out. You should look for a good quality product that nourishes the skin rather than hides it. Or, as the aesthetic medicine expert explains, "Avoid clogging the pores as much as possible".

Vitamin C in make-up, why not? If there's one thing that the new smart beauty trend has shown us, it's that we need to be realistic (or just smarter), and as you know, sometimes less is more, so choosing foundations, concealers or cleansers that take care of you while "making you beautiful" is the most convenient and efficient choice. As the head of the Aesthetic Medicine Department at the Martín del Yerro | Amselem Clinic points out, "It would be a good idea because there are days when you forget to take vitamin C before going out, but you don't usually forget to put on make-up, so if it's already included, so much the better".

MULTIACTIVE SERUM FOUNDATION

Available in four shades

A make-up base with anti-ageing, hydrating and illuminating properties thanks to the key ingredients of its revolutionary formula: copper peptides, hemp oil, hyaluronic acid and, of course, vitamin C.

The Expert Trick / The Make-up Artist's Trick

1.- Apply a few dabs with your fingertips to specific areas of redness or imperfections for an even, natural finish.

2.- If you're looking to highlight or sculpt your face with subtle contouring, combine darker and lighter shades to accentuate your features.

MULTIACTIVE BRIGHTENING CONCEALER

It is a multi-benefit concealer and illuminator thanks to its skincare formula. Vitamin C leaves skin brighter and smoother, while caffeine instantly revitalises the look with an anti-fatigue result. A hybrid product that moisturises, firms and reduces wrinkles thanks to active ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Copper Peptides and Vitamin E.

At what age is it "appropriate" to include vitamin C in your facial routine?

According to Amselem, "there is no specific age. What is recommended is when the first signs of ageing appear on the skin, such as blemishes due to post-inflammatory pigmentation after acne comedones, dulling of the luminosity of the face, skin that is more worn and loses elasticity...".

And when should it be applied?

The good thing about vitamin C is that, unlike other active ingredients, it can be used day and night and at any time of the year, always "in combination with sunscreen or other active ingredients", says the doctor. The same goes for the seasons, as it can be used at any time of the year, including summer

Are you brightening, moisturising, or reducing sunspots? There are undoubtedly many reasons why vitamin C has become the trendy ingredient of choice among professionals. Now, all you have to do is add it to your beauty routine. What are you waiting for?
