It may sound silly, but when you think about it, vitamin C has always been a part of your life - probably more than you realise: from those orange juices you used to drink as a child, screaming, "Drink it fast or you'll lose your vitamins!", to becoming one of the essential ingredients in (almost) every cosmetic product. But what is it about this antioxidant that makes it a beauty must-have? An expert explains.
What is vitamin C, and how does it benefit the skin?Vitamin C - or ascorbic acid - is an essential molecule for skin health. In fact, it is a naturally occurring component of the skin. It starts in high concentrations, but with age, sun exposure or pollution, its levels gradually decline. So, what does vitamin C do for your skin?Dr Moisés Amselem, head of aesthetic medicine at the Martín del Yerro | Amselem Clinic, highlights four main benefits:

How to include vitamin C in your skincare routineTo counteract the natural loss of vitamin C, topical application of products containing this powerful antioxidant is necessary from traditional cosmetics - masks, serums or creams - to make-up itself. For Dr Moisés Amselem, the choice of good make-up is directly related to the skin's health. "We constantly see skin problems caused by make-up that is not recommended," he points out. You should look for a good quality product that nourishes the skin rather than hides it. Or, as the aesthetic medicine expert explains, "Avoid clogging the pores as much as possible". Vitamin C in make-up, why not? If there's one thing that the new smart beauty trend has shown us, it's that we need to be realistic (or just smarter), and as you know, sometimes less is more, so choosing foundations, concealers or cleansers that take care of you while "making you beautiful" is the most convenient and efficient choice. As the head of the Aesthetic Medicine Department at the Martín del Yerro | Amselem Clinic points out, "It would be a good idea because there are days when you forget to take vitamin C before going out, but you don't usually forget to put on make-up, so if it's already included, so much the better". |
At what age is it "appropriate" to include vitamin C in your facial routine?According to Amselem, "there is no specific age. What is recommended is when the first signs of ageing appear on the skin, such as blemishes due to post-inflammatory pigmentation after acne comedones, dulling of the luminosity of the face, skin that is more worn and loses elasticity...". And when should it be applied? The good thing about vitamin C is that, unlike other active ingredients, it can be used day and night and at any time of the year, always "in combination with sunscreen or other active ingredients", says the doctor. The same goes for the seasons, as it can be used at any time of the year, including summer.
